Rom 9:30-10:4 KJV NASB   The Jews, because they did not know the truth about how to obtain a righteousness that would be pleasing to God, stumbled and fell over Christ.  They were separated from God because they attempted to obtain His favor in their own way instead of the way that He had set forth - the righteousness that justifies one before God is Christ's, and it is apprehended only through faith in Him.  It is not by one's own righteousness that one is saved.
